WINTERIZING BEGINS...

September 15th brought Grove City College students to the GCCG site.  Nearly 20 students made short order of a big job in just a few hours.  The beds were weeded and/or cleaned out, with garden leftovers added into composting piles.  The soil was amended with minerals and other products to enhance soil biology, then mulched with grass & leaves to prepare the beds for the 2013 planting season.

On September 30th, youth from East Main Presbyterian joined community volunteers for another session of winterizing.  We are thankful for the efforts of students from GCC and EMP, and of course...for all of our wonderful community volunteers!

HARVEST TIME!

Volunteers have been carefully tending the garden all summer long...and their efforts have resulted in a bountiful harvest!  Tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, lettuce, beans and potatoes have been donated to Grove City Food Pantry...almost 150 pounds worth of fresh produce!!

We appreciate the time and effort of our volunteers and look forward to another great year of community gardening in 2012-13!

MOWING, MULCHING & PLANTING...
In preparation for the first planting, many hours of volunteer labor contributed to preparing the garden beds!  We appreciate the generous donation of wood for the beds, top soil, mulch, a garden shed and other necessary materials.  Photos of the May 12th workday are posted in the "Photos" section of the blog...take a few minutes to view the photos and you'll understand why our volunteer crews deserve so much credit and appreciation!!

June 3 arrived with a blustery wind and partly sunny skies that were a welcome change from days of rain!  Community leaders, volunteers and GCCG leadership team members celebrated the official opening of the first garden site.  Joining in the celebration were 20-25 people from the community, ranging from age two to age 70+!  New volunteers were recruited, tiny sprouts were seen emerging from the soil and more excitement was created for the endless possibilities of community gardening!

Thanks to everyone who contributed time, effort and funding to make this program a reality!

 "MUGSHOTS!"
Families and friends of Hillview art students enjoyed another amazing Art Show on May 3, 2012!  Student artwork was displayed, and those that attended the show can vouch for the creative and talented artists we have in our school district!  Student pottery creations featured mugs with various facial features/designs...all sprouting fresh green grass, lettuce or herbs! Art teacher Chris Bauer generously donated the proceeds from the sale of pottery mugs and planters.  If you weren't able to attend, we're posting a few photos for you to enjoy.  Special thanks to Mr. Bauer...pottery sale proceeds totaled more than $700!!

UNITED WAY DAY OF CARING at
Grove City Community Garden!
Students from Grove City College, community volunteers and GCCG leadership team members braved cold, damp weather on Saturday, April 28th...preparing the garden plots for planting!  Despite the chilly temperatures and overcast skies, all of the beds were lined with newspaper and filled with a mixture of soil, leaves and other "special ingredients"!  Shoveling, carting wheelbarrows full of soil and digging trenches...everyone cooperated together and the efforts of all involved are much appreciated!!
